Mino Yaki – Japanese Ceramic Art with a Soul Steeped in Tradition
The art of pottery in MINO, known as Mino Yaki, boasts a heritage spanning over 1,300 years. In the gentle hills of Gifu Prefecture, where earth, water, and fire exist in perfect harmony, the first ceramic pieces were crafted as early as the 7th century. During the Edo period (1603–1868), Mino Yaki flourished, giving rise to distinctive styles such as Shino, Oribe, and Kizeto – each with its own unique aesthetic, yet all reflecting a quiet elegance and deep reverence for nature.
What sets Mino Yaki apart is its rich variety of forms – from rustic to refined, subtle to vibrant. Yet all pieces share a common thread: meticulous craftsmanship and profound respect for the materials. Many steps are still carried out entirely by hand – shaping, glazing, decorating – resulting in one-of-a-kind creations bearing the signature of the artisan.

Notes for use and care
Ceramic products with relatively open surfaces have water and breathing activities with food prepared in them. For example, they can absorb and release flavors. With prolonged use and careful care, ceramic products enhance flavor nuances of the food being served in them, such as tea. Before use, ceramic should be washed with warm water and left to stand for a while filled with warm water. Ceramics that have absorbed water are less susceptible to tea stains and other discolorations. After use, always wash with clean, warm water without detergent. Abrasive sponges, hard brushes or similar should not be used for cleaning. Ceramic products decorated and painted with gold, silver or colors should not be exposed to high heat (oven) and sudden temperature changes, as this may damage the colors. The colors may change due to oxidation, even peel off at high heat. If the colors darken, you can use special polish to refresh the colors. But please avoid bleach at all costs.
All products are unique. Slight deviations from the picture are possible. Due to the artisan production, small irregularities are evidence of authenticity and craftsmanship and do not represent a reduction in value.
