Naniwa Advance sharpening stones

The Naniwa Advance is the versatile sharpening stone for anyone who values control, a fine sharpening feel, and reliable results. It is the successor to the well-known Naniwa Super Stone series – in new packaging but with the same quality. With its medium-hard resin bond, the Advance offers a very good balance between material removal and sharpening feel. The stone only needs to be soaked briefly, remains dimensionally stable for a long time, and delivers consistent results for both re-sharpening and fine sharpening. Ideal for kitchen knives, razors, and other tools.

What is so special about Naniwa Advance?

The Advance uses a high-quality resin bond that is specially tailored to each grit. This ensures consistent, controlled material removal and an especially pleasant sharpening feel – almost like a natural stone. The stone is slightly softer than the Chocera Pro, providing a direct, sensitive sharpening experience with every movement. At the same time, it is wear-resistant and remains flat for a long time with proper care – ideal for precise work on high-quality blades.

Advance - Which sharpening stone grit for which task?

Advance 220: Coarse grinding for heavily dulled or damaged blades. Fast material removal to restore the basic shape.
Advance 400 / 800: Preliminary sharpening for light wear or as an intermediate step between coarse and fine grinding.
Advance 1000: Universal resharpening. Restores basic sharpness to dull knives and is suitable for regular use.
Advance 2000 / 3000: Fine sharpening for further smoothing of the edge – optimally prepares for higher grits.
Advance 5000: Fine sharpening for smoothly cutting blades. Ideal for fine kitchen knives, e.g. for filleting or precise cuts.
Advance 8000 / 10000 / 12000: Ultra-fine polishing for maximum sharpness and mirror-finished edges – perfect for razors or knife enthusiasts with the highest standards.

When should you choose a Naniwa Advance sharpening stone?

Ideal for anyone who sharpens regularly and values a balanced sharpening performance. It offers excellent feedback, is pleasant to use, and delivers consistent results with little effort. This stone is a very good choice especially for thinly ground kitchen knives, razors, or tools in the fine sharpening range – suitable for both beginners and experienced sharpeners.

How does the Naniwa Advance differ from the Naniwa Super Stone?

The Naniwa Advance water sharpening stone is technically identical to the former Naniwa Super Stone (also known as the Specialty Stone). The composition, bonding, grit structure, and sharpening characteristics are exactly the same. It is simply a new name and updated packaging design. So if you've already had good experiences with the Super Stones, you can count on the same quality and performance with the Naniwa Advance.

Care and use

Before sharpening, the Advance should be briefly moistened with water – a short soak is sufficient. During sharpening, a thin film of water ensures optimal results. The stone must not be stored in water permanently. After use, it should be thoroughly rinsed with water and completely air-dried – ideally in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. To keep the surface clean and effective, occasional cleaning with a Nagura flattening stone is recommended. For restoring a flat surface, a lapping plate can be used.
