The history of Sakai knives goes back to the construction of Emperor Nintoku's mausoleum, which is considered to be the largest burial mound in the world and was built around the 5th century. A large number of ploughs were needed to build the 654-metre-high burial mound, and blacksmiths from all over Japan gathered in Sakai to make them. Since then, the art of blacksmithing has remained at the site not far from Kyoto. After the time of sword-making for the samurai was over, the craftsmen used their knowledge to make chef's knives. Its proximity to the old imperial city of Kyoto made it one of the most important knife-making centres in Japan. Today, Aoki Hamono brings together the masters of traditional knife making to preserve the 600-year-old tradition of knife making in Sakai and pass it on to the next generation.

SAKAI knives are subject to very high quality standards and enjoy a very good reputation in Japan and around the world.
