Original Takayama Cha-shaku from Chikumeido Sabun. Chikumeido Sabun is a 24th generation manufacturer of matcha brooms, tea spoons (bamboo spatulas) and other tea ceremony utensils made of high quality bamboo and masterfully handcrafted. It is known and appreciated for the high quality of its products, to which it is self-evidently committed, as it supplies most tea ceremony schools and their students in Japan. From the selection and preparation of the bamboo - drying, de-oiling - to the finished product, only traditional methods and techniques are used. The Cha-shaku is an indispensable utensil for Sado, the Japanese tea ceremony. And, of course, for anyone who wants to prepare their matcha authentically. The matcha spoon was handcrafted in the traditional way, is about 18.5 cm long and 1.2 cm wide. The basic set includes the Cha-sen, a matcha bamboo whisk, the Cha-shaku, the matcha tea spoon and the Cha-wan, a tea bowl for the matcha. This cha-shaku is made of black bamboo aged over two 2 years.

Chikumeido Sabun, a manufactory with rich tradition

The manufactory in Takayama is now run by the 24th generation. Kubon Sabun is the tea whisk master known worldwide in professional circles for many years. Numerous awards in Japan and some important international presentations of the traditional craft but above all the long family tradition are for Kubon Sabun the obligation and honor at the same time to cultivate the art of making Cha-sen and also to pass it on as an instructor. He himself is convinced that as long as Sado, the tea ceremony, is preserved in Japan, his craftsmanship will also be in demand. Therefore, he has made it an important goal to pass on his art to the next generation.

Many shapes, three materials

Cha-sen, the tea or matcha brooms, come in a great many shapes and designs. Each school of tea ceremony has, in principle, its preferred versions. The materials are also different: white, black and Soot bamboo are available. Soot bamboo is very rare and mostly reserved for the Omote-senke school and its students. For a layman, for someone who has not studied the different ceremonies in depth, it is impossible to make the right choice. That is why we have personally asked Kubon Sabun to give us a recommendation for our small, high quality range. With the goal that we and our customers can enjoy an excellent Matcha.

Takayama, the origin of tea ceremony and cha-sen

Chikumeido Sabun, the manufactory of our choice, is located in the Takayama region. This is where Sado, the Japanese tea ceremony, was invented over 500 years ago and where Cha-sen was developed at the request of the monk Murata Jyuko. Sosetsu was the name of the master craftsman who was born in Takayama City and invented the Cha-sen, this ingenious, fine and important utensil for the preparation of the stimulating, wholesome Matcha.

All products are unique. Slight deviations from the picture are possible. Due to the artisan production, small irregularities are evidence of authenticity and craftsmanship and do not represent a reduction in value.

Chikumeido Sabun

The Chikumeido workshop in Takayama, Ikoma, is currently led by Mr. Sabun Kubo. He is the 24th-generation descendant of "Chasen" craftsmen. The masters of tea whisking are renowned in professional circles worldwide, and the Chikumeido workshop is considered one of the highest-quality bamboo whisk manufacturers in the world. This long family tradition is both a commitment and an honor for Mr. Sabun Kubo. The first tea whisk (Chasen) is said to have been crafted about 500 years ago by Takayama Sosetsu, the second son of the Takayama lord. Sabun Kubo himself is convinced that as long as Sado, the Japanese tea ceremony, endures, there will be demand for his craftsmanship. Therefore, he has made it an important goal to pass on his art to the next generation. This is how the tools for frothing perfect matcha are created: For the matcha whisks, bamboo pieces aged 2-3 years are divided into 12 cm long sections and then split multiple times to obtain thinner tines. The tips are meticulously shaved by hand by artisans to a thickness of approximately 0.05 mm, making them slightly translucent. All products are unique. Slight variations from the illustration are possible. Due to the artisanal production process, minor irregularities are evidence of authenticity and craftsmanship and do not diminish the value.
