Tsumugi by Gato Mikio
This product series includes traditional Japanese food bowls used as soup bowls, rice bowls, cereal bowls or even for desserts. The naming of the series is based on a particularly exclusive and valuable silk: Yuki Tsumugi. This silk, produced by a special weaving technique, has a special softness and pattern. Very similar feels who takes the rice bowls of the series Tsumugi in the hand. The wood of the Japanese zelkove is ideal for traditional processing. The surface becomes unusually soft and gentle, delicately textured and resistant due to the well-known pliability of the wood. In this way, unusually beautiful shapes can be produced. Designer Ikumi Ishizaki - umu design - studied the high school of design at Osaka University. \"Kiji-Rokuro-biki\" is the name of the traditional processing technique used to make wooden vessels in Yamanaka at Gato Mikio. A special process is used as early as the sawing stage, making the products more resistant to deformation. The artisans then work in precisely defined steps with special tools to shape them.
The bowls and plates are of extraordinary, simple beauty. Very thin-walled, very finely crafted, the grace of the natural material comes to the fore succinctly. Elegant, unobtrusive, but sovereign. The internationally sought-after designer Ikumi Ishizaki lives the vision of perfectly combining high aesthetics with extremely practical use. Her design studio umu works with prestigious clients, often manufacturers of home furniture and housewares.
Zelkove, the wood of temple builders and bow masters
The zelkove belongs to the elm family and is revered in Japan as a very special tree, also called kaeki. It is relatively rare and is therefore only used for really high-quality products. The ring-porous wood is very durable and resistant, it is one of the best you can get, for example, for furniture or even buildings. In Japan, you can visit temples that were built with this wood over a thousand years ago and still have the original beams. Another application is the construction of the famous Japanese bows (yumi). Because the wood of the Zelkove is hard, resistant and at the same time absolutely elastic, the best Japanese bows are made of Zelkove.
