Snakewood

Snakewood gets its name from its striking structure and colouring with dark brown and reddish-brown patches and an irregular, wavy pattern that sometimes occurs in snakes. The wood is extremely hard and is one of the most expensive woods in the world. It is very resistant, extremely durable, but also very difficult to work with and requires a high level of skill. It is used for very high-quality, durable products, including in violin making.

The botanical name is Brosimum guanense and the plant belongs to the mulberry family (Moraceae). The trunk of this deciduous tree species has a thickness of approx. 0.6 - 1 m and grows to a height of approx. 20 m.
