Like Joseph, Mary is also a slender figure. Her loving facial expression is emphasized by the gracefully tilted head. To be completely mother, to be one with her task, seems to be the message she proclaims. Like Joseph, she is made in one piece, carved from fine Mizuki wood. Christian motifs tend to be the exception in Japan, but Mary and Joseph certainly find admirers. In the 16th century, the Christian faith found its way to Japan, but without becoming a state religion. Approximately six percent of the population of Japan are Christians.

Kokeshi doll is made in Japan and made of solid wood. Joseph and Mary were carved from one piece of Mizuki wood, Japanese dogwood. Before processing, the wood is stored and dried for a very long time. Each artist working at Usaburo chooses the right piece of wood for his figure himself. Both the carving and the painting are done by hand by an artist.

Kokeshi dolls from the Usaburo workshop are particularly high-quality and are considered among the most beautiful by many. The family-owned business was founded by Usaburo Okamoto, born in 1917 in Shinto. The workshop is characterized by a special passion and high craftsmanship. The founder, Usaburo Okamoto, has won many awards for his work. His employees and some family members are also proud recipients of awards for their creations.
