Oryoki or Ouryouki, is often called Buddha bowl. Originally, these bowls served as a set of dishes for the monks. More is not necessary. One takes the bowl in which just enough fits. Sometimes two, sometimes three, or for the main meal all five. The smallest - sixth - is usually used as a saucer for the largest bowl. After the meal, one cleans the bowls, by hand of course, and wraps them with a cloth. The knot of the cloth symbolizes a lotus flower. This oryoki bowl set is handmade by master craftsmen at Gatomikio from the precious wood of the Japanese zelkove, which belongs to the elm family. Zelkova serrata belong to the very slow growing trees. To protect the wood, the masters apply 5 layers of the famous Urushi varnish.

Zelkove, the wood of temple builders and bow masters

The zelkove belongs to the elm family and is revered in Japan as a very special tree, also called kaeki. It is relatively rare and is therefore only used for really high-quality products. The ring-porous wood is very durable and resistant, it is one of the best you can get, for example, for furniture or even buildings. In Japan, you can visit temples that were built with this wood over a thousand years ago and still have the original beams. Another application is the construction of the famous Japanese bows (yumi). Because the wood of the Zelkove is hard, resistant and at the same time absolutely elastic, the best Japanese bows are made of Zelkove.

The company Gato Mikio was founded in 1908 in Yamanaka Onsen by Kaga as a wood workshop called Wareto. Yamanaka Onsen is located in Ishikawa Prefecture in western Japan, approximately at the same latitude as Tokyo.
