The Kanetsugu Cutlery forge was established in 1949, emerging from the Kawamura Matsujiro & Co., which had been producing Japanese kitchen knives since 1918. Both companies were led by Matsujiro Kawamura. The company's tradition dates back to the Nanboku-cho era (1336-1392) when an early Kanetsugu became a swordsmith. In 1994, Mitsuyasu Kawamura became the president of Kanetsugu in the third generation. Thus, Kanetsugu is one of the knife manufacturers with the longest family tradition in this industry. The company is headquartered in Seki City, the capital of knife production in Japan.
