Genuine Japanese lacquerware from this manufactory convinces with its material, workmanship and multiple award-winning design. Shikki (lacquerware) or Urushi refers to Japanese dinnerware made in the traditional way with natural raw materials. These drinking cups are made of Japanese Senesche, a light wood with beautiful grain, were turned by hand on the potter's wheel in the Yamanaka process.

Real Japanese lacquer art

Sene ash, from drinking cups to piano making

The mustard tree is found only in East Asia. It is a deciduous tree, grows up to 30 meters high and reaches a diameter of about 1 meter. The botanical name Kalopanax indicates two characteristics: kalo means beautiful and panax means something like panacea. Even though the wood of Asian mustard has certain similarities with ash wood, they are not related. Mustard wood is significantly - about 20% - lighter and also softer than ash wood. Mustard wood is excellently suited for high-quality decorative processing. Very smooth surfaces are possible, the grain is very soft flowing. Mustard wood is used in Japan for furnishings, carving, pianos and jewelry, as well as for utilitarian objects (lacquerware)

Gato Mikio

The company Gato Mikio was founded in 1908 in Yamanaka Onsen by Kaga as a wood workshop called Wareto. Yamanaka Onsen is located in Ishikawa Prefecture in western Japan, approximately at the same latitude as Tokyo. For 450 years, Ishikawa Prefecture has been known for producing lacquerware (lacquerware, urushi), wooden products with elaborate lacquer coatings. The Gato Mikio workshop utilizes the advantages of traditional Yamanaka lacquerware production, where high-quality, selected woods are precisely shaped using a potter's wheel.
