The production is traditional, truly masterful and makes each piece an exquisite element on the stylishly set table. Usubiki by Gato Mikio
The USUBIKI product series includes drinking cups of different sizes, soup bowls, rice bowls and plates. The design is very reduced, straightforward, minimalist. Not fashion but lasting pleasure is in the foreground. All products are made of Japanese elm, a valuable and very durable hard wood, and protected with the highly valued Urushi lacquer. The combination of the noble wood with the incredibly durable Urushi makes possible a fantastically thin wall thickness with high stability at the same time, which decisively shapes the character of the Usubiki series.
Zelkove, the wood of temple builders and bow masters
The zelkove belongs to the elm family and is revered in Japan as a very special tree and also called kaeki. It is relatively rare and is therefore only used for really high-quality products. The ring-porous wood is very durable and resistant, it is one of the best you can get, for example, for furniture or even buildings. In Japan, you can visit temples that were built with this wood over a thousand years ago and still have the original beams. Another application is the construction of the famous Japanese bows (yumi). Since the wood of the zelkove is hard, resistant and at the same time absolutely elastic, the best Japanese bows are made of zelkove.
All products are unique. Slight deviations from the picture are possible.
