The design exactly matches the Kyusu Kintsuru. But for many, this piece of jewelry will remain a dream, because the Mitsukoshi series by Suigetsu Toen is rarely available. Too time-consuming are the production and the ornate decoration of the beautiful Mitsukoshi products. However, the exclusive incense burner must not stand unused in the showcase. Made of the famous, natural purple clay of Mie Prefecture, it perfectly enriches the domestic tea ceremony.

Hiroshi Suigetsu is one of the great artists of traditional, Japanese ceramic manufacturing. As the third master, he has led the ceramics association in Yokkaichi for many years, his impressive career is accompanied by many honors and awards. The Kintsuru censer, after coming out of the wood-fired traditional ceramic kiln, was decorated by Suigetsu with a special sandblasting technique with wonderful flying cranes. The golden cranes in particular seem to truly move. Kintsuru is a wonderful art object that confidently presents the perfection of the gifted artisan.

Suigetsu Toen - excellent craftsmanship

Even after more than 300 years, traditional handicrafts in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, continue to flourish in ancient splendor. Banko Yaki pottery has been one of the main pillars of this local culture for centuries. The name Banko is derived from the signature that the founder of the first kiln put on his works. This signature expresses a deep desire that his works be given permanence and enjoyment for a long time. In 1979, Banko Yaki ceramics was recognized by the Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry as an official traditional craft product of Japan. Today, the teapots made of the \"Purple Clay\" (Shidei-Kyusu) are famous among tea connoisseurs worldwide. Suigetsu Toen tries to balance innovative techniques with his respect for ancient traditions. Thus, he uses conventional methods in manufacturing, but experiments with new techniques in artistic decoration. His excellent works and the many recognitions he has received was the welcome reason for Mie Prefectural Government to declare Suigetsu Toen a Mie Brand.

Tokoname Yaki and Banko Yaki

Tokoname and Yokkaichi are probably the most famous places for ceramic products of the highest quality. The two cities are located at nearly the same elevation southwest of Tokyo, separated only by Ise Bay on Japan's Pacific coast. The clay from Tokoname is red, while that from Banko is purple (violet) and yellow, respectively. Both are very rich in minerals and iron. What are the key differences for tea lovers? Tokoname clay teapots are \"baked\" using either the oxidation process (red teapot) or reduction firing (black teapot). The red teapots are recommended more for mild teas, the black teapots are green tea of any variety very good to good. The purple-colored Banko Yaki is processed at very high firing temperatures, which further activates the already high iron content. The surfaces inside the teapot are usually quite porous, which on the one hand allows the teapot to release minerals to the tea very well, and on the other hand allows ingredients of the tea to be deposited in the teapot, which increasingly leads to flavor enhancement and harmonization with use. Teapots made of Banko-Yaki are especially recommended for high-class, mild tea varieties such as Gyokuro, Kabusecha or noble Sencha. For the ceremony of tea drinking, which in Japan often has a strong meditative character, there are some products and additional accessories that have more or less importance. A special significance has the incense burner, in which, for example, valuable incense glows and spreads its pleasant fragrance.

How to use

Cleaning: Rinse exterior and interior with warm water only. Do not use any cleaning agents. If necessary, remove contamination with infused green tea.

Suigetsu

In 1944, Suigetsu Hiroshi, the current third master, was born. His skillfulness has received high recognition through numerous exhibitions and many awards. He was recognized as a "Traditional Art Craftsman" in 1976, a highly esteemed classification in Japan, followed by 26 more awards. In 1990, his works were exhibited at the Emperor's enthronement ceremonies, and in 1999, the Crown Prince invited him to personally present his artworks. Some of his works were presented as gifts during state visits, such as in 2007 during Chancellor Merkel's visit. Hiroshi Suigetsu continues to be an active artisan, supported by his wife Kishiyo and his two sons, Jun and Ushio. We are deeply honored that the Suigetsu family trusts Oryoki and allows us to showcase and offer their products.
